The Library Program @ PS 89
Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.
—Maya Angelou
The Library Program @ PS 89 works cooperatively with students, parents, and teachers to support the learning of all of our students. The library program aims to promote the love of reading, inspire curiosity, and support the Pre-K to 5th grade curriculum in all subject areas. In addition, the PS 89 library is a welcoming learning space for all students to think, share, and grow.
The PS 89 Meet the Writers program connects students with authors and illustrators. Student participation in the program inspires a lasting connection with the authors’ and illustrators’ books, motivates students to write and draw, and transforms reading from a solitary activity to a communal, exciting endeavor.
To date, we have welcomed the following authors and illustrators:
Michael Hearst is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and children’s book author. Focus: the unique features of animals for 1st graders
Ruth Chan is an award-winning illustrator/author of comics and picture books. Focus: community and storytelling with pictures for Kindergarten
Steve Sheinkin, a former textbook writer, is now making amends by writing books young people might actually want to read. Focus: the American Revolutionary War for 3rd and 4th graders and the Civil War for 5th graders
Kevin Noble Maillard is a law professor, NY Times contributor and children’s book author. Focus: Native American history and modern-day traditions for 4th and 5th grade students
