Technology

Students in grades 3-5 participate in our technology lab, where we cover a variety of topics throughout the year. All students receive instruction in computer basics, digital citizenship, research, and computer science.

We begin the year by introducing students to device navigation and the digital tools they will use throughout the school year. All instructional materials are accessed through our digital classroom platform and our Technology Google Classroom. Using MacBooks, students work toward becoming proficient and confident computer users. In addition, they develop their typing skills through Typing Club to ensure they are well-prepared for computer-based state assessments in the spring.

Our second unit emphasizes digital citizenship and online safety. Students learn about their responsibilities when using technology and explore strategies for protecting their personal information both inside and outside the classroom.

Next, students transition into our research unit. While specific platforms vary by grade level, all activities align with the Passport to Social Studies curriculum. Students conduct research, build media literacy skills, and apply their learning to create original ebooks. This unit deepens their understanding of social studies content and supports ELA development by teaching them how to avoid plagiarism and use their own voice in their writing.

Our final unit focuses on computer science. Using Code.org, students learn foundational concepts such as commands, algorithms, and programming. Throughout this unit, they complete a variety of projects designed to strengthen their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

Our technology program gives students the tools they need to feel confident and successful when using technology. Throughout the year, they explore new skills, practice responsible online behavior, and learn creative ways to use digital tools. By the end of the program, students are ready to navigate technology safely and apply what they’ve learned in their schoolwork and everyday lives.
